The Summer Retreat – How Fiction Works with Claire Keegan 1-9 August 2025

Our summer retreat will focus on how fiction works. Using a novel, a novella and five short stories, Claire Keegan will address the following:

• The structure of narrative

• Differences between the short story, the novel and the novella.

• Time in fiction

• Character development

• Dialogue

• Tension and Drama

• Loss and Desire

• Point of View

• Paragraph Structure and Syntax

Mornings will be kept quiet for writing, reading and study. Keegan’s lectures will be held in the afternoons, from 2pm to 5pm except on Tuesday when participants will be given an afternoon off, to relax. The reading list will be sent out in June.

The residential fee includes all meals, drinks, tuition and accommodation. The non-residential fee includes everything except B&B. Vegetarians, vegans and those who require gluten-free and lactose-free diets will be catered for. Lunch and dinner will be served daily. Breakfast is continental.

Participants arrive on the afternoon of August 1st and depart after final lecture ends on August 9th. Teach Bhríde is a 5 minute walk from the bus stop where participants can avail of a service to Dublin.

All those availing of accommodation at Teach Bhríde will be provided with a single bedroom, most of which are en-suite. The accommodation at Teach Bhríde is comfortable and the atmosphere is most welcoming. Parking is free. Anyone with an interest in reading or writing fiction is welcome to attend.
